The Little Dandelion a children's book
Case study
The Little Dandelion is a children’s book I illustrated, wrote and published. The target group is children ages 2-7 years old. The book uses Norwegian flowers to drive the storyline. The focus was on the illustrations and highlighting words so that children could learn the names of the flowers.
Conclusion
The end product is a high-quality, informational, and beautifully illustrated children’s book, which will teach children about flowers and how we all are different and unique, just like flowers. I would love to do this type of project more, and I cannot wait to work with you on more children’s illustrated books.
Client
The Little Dandelion was an independent project without any client. The industry for the potential client to publish the book is the book publishing industry.
The Design problem
Children love learning and crave new information and repetition to learn new things daily. Children love exploring their environment and learning about it. Therefore, I decided to create a children's book about flowers and how we are all unique and different. The project was to create, write, and design an illustrated children's book. The book had to be based on Norwegian flowers and their unique qualities. The current market has few books based on this. The children would be able to learn about the unique flowers we have in Norway and their unique qualities.
Constraints
The period I had for the project was one month, which would limit the volume of the book I could produce. I had to choose between quantity or quality.
Solution
The solution is a shorter children’s book focusing on quality over quantity. The book has high-quality illustrations and a short but impactful story focused on teaching children about flowers and a lesson about us all being different.
Key learning
During the project, I developed my skills in illustration and layout, especially in procreate, targeted towards children. I extensively researched how to design for children and the types of styles used. I Developed storytelling skills through illustrations and how to write an impactful story for a younger audience And how to incorporate them with illustrations. Lastly, I learned how to self-publish a digital book on Amazon.com.
Work process
I started by researching the children's book industry, the style of illustrations, layout, and stories. I then started by writing the story so that the story would be reflected in the illustrations. I then made the sketches for all the illustrations for the book and put them next to each other. I also created mood boards for each of the flowers so I could catch the essence of each flower and its uniqueness.
Result
The end product is a children's book I am proud of. Through effective planning and research, I managed to create an end product that is eye-catching and exciting to the target group. The book is cohesive, keeping the same style throughout the book.
